Bontems Musical bird box.
1880s vintage.
As the bird sings, he turns from side to side, flaps his wings, moves his tail, and opens and closes his beak.
A very high quality bird box of its day.
Case is pure tortoise shell.
Design on top are all inlaid pieces of metal very artfully done.
Ivory beak.
Top lid has hand engraving.
Feathers on bird are real bird feathers.
A very rare example with a hidden snuff compartment in rear (shown in one of the pictures).
Works beautifully.
Bird sings several different song verses.
Dimensions: side to side = 3-7/8",
front to rear = 2-5/8",
top to bottom = 1-1/4".
Winds on the bottom.
One of the most beautiful and superb bird boxes I have ever seen.
