L'Universelle INTERCHANGEABLE CYLINDER MUSIC BOX
L'Universelle INTERCHANGEABLE CYLINDER MUSIC BOX. Made in the 1890s by Cuendet, the L'Universelle sought to provide a type of cylinder instrument, for which additional cylinders could be purchased reasonably. Cylinders are one tune in length. This example, which is beautifully restored, comes with 6 cylinders each approx 6-1/2" long. Case has magnificent inlay. Bottom drawer stores the extra cylinders.
The box is wound by a unique appearing "ship's wheel" on the inside left hand side of the case. A lever on the right side panel permits quick changing of cylinders and locking them into place. Dimensions (approx): Side to side = 23", Front to rear = 12", Top to bottom with lid down = 15", Top to bottom with lid up = 25".
